The grocery and health store Whole Foods is building up enthusiasm about its beer selection. Stores around the region provide beer tasting classes, and now Charlottesville beer enthusiasts are getting on board.
Whole Foods on Hydraulic Road in Charlottesville will host a beer tasting class Tuesday night. It's a chance to learn about different varieties of beer and to try them paired with food.
"It's for everyone from novices to beer nerds," said Sean Chandler, beer buyer specialist for Whole Foods Market Charlottesville.
Each class has a theme, focusing on different styles and regions. For $10 people can sample several beers and learn about different breweries and styles.
"Beer is awesome. It's a growing field that a lot of people are kind of scared of, but they shouldn't be. They need to come in and find out it's fun," said Chandler. "And for those that already love beer, it's fun getting together with people who have the same interests."
The beer tasting classes are being offered in all Whole Foods stores in the mid-Atlantic region that sell beer.
Tuesday's beer tasting class is the second one held at the Charlottesville Whole Foods. It will focus on seasonal summer beers like pilsners, lagers, and fruit beers. The beers will be paired with herbed potato salad, Korean beef and mozzarella, and some local breweries will be featured in the tasting.
In July there will be an Independence Day-themed tasting. People will get to try American craft brew and Belgium beer - since Belgium's Independence Day is also in July. In August, Whole Foods will feature a sour beer tasting.
The beer tasting classes are held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month at the Charlottesville Whole Foods. You can pay for the class beforehand at Whole Foods.
