New trails are creating connections through the ragged mountain natural area in Albemarle County.

The Charlottesville Parks and Recreation crew led a group of more than 20 volunteers to replace trails and create new trail links Saturday morning as part of National Trails Day.

The area is closed to the public during the construction of the new dam.

"We pick the sustainable grade for the trail and we put orange flags every so many feet and we bring the volunteers out and they rake and pick ax and move rocks and lop branches and follow those orange flags and they clear a little four foot area and that's the trail," said Chris Gensic, Albemarle Parks and Trails planner.

About half of the new trails have already been built.

Organizers are hoping to have the entire project complete by the end of the year.
