Charlottesville City Council Candidate Stresses Mall Maintenance

Posted: Updated:

A Democratic candidate for Charlottesville City Council says working to maintain the downtown mall is a priority.

Bob Fenwick held a press conference at the Free Speech Wall Friday morning to discuss the results of his listening tour over the past few months.

He scraped gum off the bricks of the downtown mall to emphasize the importance of keeping the area clean for visitors and businesses.

"The downtown mall is very important for the city because it provides 35 percent of the revenue for the city, and we want to improve that if we can. We don't want to lose that, and we're in danger of killing the goose that laid the golden egg," Fenwick stated.

Fenwick says many people he has talked to feel disconnected from the city government. His goal is to focus on improving that relationship.

The Democratic primary election will be held on June 11.
