Cavaliers Stay Alive in the ACC Tournament; Beat Georgia Tech 8-2
Virginia's Scott Silverstein gave up just two earned runs in 8.2 innings pitched with six strikeouts leading Virginia to an 8-2 win over Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament.
Nick Howard, Kenny Towns and Brandon Downes all hit home runs in the victory. Howard and Towns led the team with 2 hits each. Mike Papi had 2 RBI. Virginia as a team only had 9 hits.
Silverstein improved to 9-1 with the win. The 8 2/3 innings pitched was a career high.
Coach Brian O'Connor said, "Just overall I'm really proud of this team, after yesterday's difficult loss. Led by Scott Silverstein, that's certainly a memorable outing for him in his last ACC Tournament to go out there and pitch eight and two thirds and pitch out of a few jams and really do a nice job."
Silverstein said, "I knew they were going to make plays behind me and we were going to score runs so its just about turning the page and moving on."
Virginia improves to 1-1 in the tournament and now must hope Florida State beats Virginia Tech later tonight to stay alive for an ACC Championship.
