Protesters Gather at Dumler Trial

Posted: Updated:

The drama continued outside of the courtroom as protesters took to historic Court Square ahead of the hearing to remove Albemarle County Supervisor Chris Dumler.

Throughout the seven-month saga, Dumler has faced overwhelming face-to-face criticism from protesters, demanding his resignation. Monday was nothing different as a small, but passionate group gathered outside Albemarle County Circuit Court, minutes ahead of the hearing to decide Chris Dumler's future.

By now, they are likely familiar faces to Dumler. From his arrest in October, to his guilty plea to misdemeanor sexual battery in January, and throughout his fight to stay in office, protesters have joined the embattled Scottsville supervisor every step of the way.

Protester Betty Sevachko said, "Those kind of crimes, they cannot be excused. I don't care, even if they've paid their price, they should not be in positions of leadership."

They call it an issue of humility: "Why does he not have the humility to step down and do what is best for Albemarle county instead of doing what's best for Chris Dumler," protester Steven Peters stated.

They call it an issue of morality: "I see no remorse, I see no feeling that he has paid his price," Sevachko said.

The protesters say if Dumler does remain on the board, they're not going anywhere. "If he is not removed and the law allows him to stay, then we will follow the law," Peters said, "We'll go at Mr. Dumler in the next official election."

Though most protesters self-identified as conservatives before the hearing, they vehemently denied their calls for resignation are politically motivated.
