#7 UVa Baseball Beats #2 North Carolina in Game 1 of their Series 10-4
The #7 Virginia baseball team continued its hot hitting cranking out 17 hits in a 10-4 win Thursday night over #2 ranked North Carolina. The 17 hits and 10 runs were both the most given up by UNC this season.
The Cavaliers scored in six different innings. Virginia's Mike Papi went 3-for-6 with 2 RBI. He's now 12-for-19 in the last four games. Nate Irving was 3-for-5. Every UVa position player had at least one hit.
Irving says, "An offense that never stops going, that stays consistent with their approach is the toughest to pitch against, and the hardest to defend, because you really don't know what you can do to get them off balance, and off rhythm. That's hitting sometimes. Hitting is contagious, and thankfully it was tonight."
Coach Brian O'Connor added, "The great college baseball teams, they are consistent. Everyone has lapses at times, but that's what's made this team really special, is they haven't taken a night off, and that's how you become one of the top teams in the country."
Mike Papi says, "It's just a huge confidence booster for us, I have to say, but tomorrow we're going to come out, and it's going to be a new day."
Virginia improves to 21-7 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 20-6. Virginia must sweep the series to win the ACC's Coastal Division.
Game 2 of the series is Friday night at 7pm in Chapel Hill.
