UPDATE: Michelle Lynn Powell of Waynesboro has been arrested and is being held at Middle River Regional Jail.  In all, two people had to be taken to the hospital and a total of four cars were damaged - including Powell's Chevrolet. Police say her blood alcohol level at the scene was .20. Powell is facing a DUI charge. She was released on $1,000 bond Thursday afternoon.

A Waynesboro woman is facing charges, including driving under the influence, after police say she crashed into several vehicles Wednesday night.

Police say around 9 p.m. Michelle Powell was traveling west into Waynesboro on East Main when she hit a car with two people in it, then hit a parked car and kept going.

According to an eyewitness we spoke with, Powell ran a red light at Delphine Avenue and crossed the median into oncoming traffic.  She then hit an oncoming car head on and then crashed into a pole.

We caught up with one man who says he helped chase down the woman behind the wheel.

"About the time that we got up to her vehicle, she ran the red light, took a left down Delphine Avenue here and we heard - about a minute or so later - we heard another big, loud crash, you could hear the cars and stuff hitting together. So we jumped in the car, came running down here and we found she'd hit another vehicle, crossed over onto the wrong side of the road, and into a telephone pole," said Lee Nagy.

The man and woman in the first vehicle Powell hit were taken to Augusta Health with minor injuries. No one in the car involved at the second crash was injured.

In addition to a DUI charge, Waynesboro police on the scene said Powell will likely also face a felony hit-and-run charge.

Waynesboro Police Department
Press Release

The Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Stuart Draft woman for causing a series of motor vehicle crashes which took place over a two mile distance on the City's east side. On May 15, 2013 at approximately 8:55 PM, officers responded to the 1800 block of East Main St for a report of a three vehicle crash with one of the vehicles having fled the scene. Officers determined that a hit & run driver traveling west rear ended a 2004 Kia Sorento driven by a 64 year old Waynesboro man. The impact sent the Kia into a parked 1974 Plymouth sedan. Both the driver and his 61 year old female passenger were transported by the Waynesboro First Aid Crew to Augusta Health for non-life threatening injuries. The damage to both the Kia and Plymouth is estimated at $10,000.

While officers were still working the first accident, officers received another call around 9:05 PM for an accident that happened in the 700 block of South Delphine Ave. When officers arrived, they found a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina that had crossed over the median and struck a 2008 Kia head on. The Chevrolet then struck a utility pole. The driver of the Chevrolet, Michelle Lynn Powell, 42 years old, showed obvious signs of intoxication. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries and then arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Her blood alcohol level was .20. The condition of the other driver, a 44 year old New Hope woman, is not known. Both vehicles were totaled.

Powell is being held at Middle River Regional Jail. She will be given a bond hearing when she is sober. She will likely face a felony hit & run charge for the first charge.
