PVCC History Professor Nominated for VA’s Highest Faculty Honor

Charlottesville, Va.– Piedmont Virginia Community College has nominated an author, historian and scholar to receive one of the Commonwealth's highest honors for faculty.

Colum Leckey, associate professor of history, is PVCC's nominee for the 2014 State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award, the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities. The competitive award recognizes superior accomplishments in teaching, research and public service. Selected honorees each receive $5,000 and will be celebrated at a ceremony in Richmond in February 2014.

Leckey was nominated for teaching excellence and extensive service on the College Senate and other committees. A recipient of numerous grants and fellowships to support classes, research and travel to enhance his teaching, he was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to lecture and conduct research in Russia this fall.

"Colum is extraordinary in his attitude, dedication, energy and commitment to the success of our students," said PVCC President Frank Friedman. "We are fortunate and proud to call him one of our own."

As PVCC's SCHEV nominee, Leckey will also serve as the College's honoree for the Virginia Community College Association's Faculty Showcase and PVCC's nominee for the Virginia Community College System's 2014 Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence.

Leckey authored Patrons of Enlightenment: the Free Economic Society in Eighteenth-Century Russia . He received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in history from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pittsburgh.
