RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lavish gifts and political donations have whisked a car salesman turned serial entrepreneur into the center of a growing scandal dogging Virginia's two top Republicans.
Thousands of dollars doled out by Jonnie R. Williams and his company, Star Scientific, to Gov. Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli have raised eyebrows.
The FBI is looking into Williams' relationship with McDonnell and his wife, each of whom promoted Williams' company's latest dietary supplement around the same time he paid to cater their daughter's wedding. Cuccinelli also has come under scrutiny for failing to report that he vacationed at Williams' homes and held stock in the company.
Meanwhile, the colorful venture capitalist's company is facing a federal securities probe and three shareholder lawsuits.
