The Virginia women's tennis team will play in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the third year in a row, after beating Texas 4-3 Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center.
The #14 Cavaliers and #18 Longhorns were tied at three matches apiece, when junior Li Xi won a third-set tiebreak to clinch the match for UVa.
Li says, "I told myself I'm not gonna lose this match. I'm going to fight to the end. I didn't think about the score. I just played."
Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau says, "She played the best tennis of her entire career, maybe, in this moment. You couldn't ask for more than that as a coach. And to have all the fans right there on top of it, and to have a perfect day. Look, even if that's the first match of the year, to kick off the season, it's still going to be one of the best matches you ever get to experience."
Virginia will play Texas A&M at the University of Illinois in the Round of Sixteen Friday at five o'clock.
