Fluvanna County Public Schools Announces Teacher of the Year

Fluvanna County Public Schools is pleased to announce Ms. Lori Hoffman has been named 2012-13 Division Teacher of the Year. She was chosen for this honor by a committee of administrators and staff who considered a roster of six school-level Teachers of the Year.
The teachers were recognized by the School board at its May 8 meeting. This is the third year that Fluvanna County Public Schools has recognized "Teachers of the Year". The American Legion will host a reception at the Lakeside Christian Church to honor the District-Level Teacher of the Year.
Gena Keller, Superintendent, remarked, "I am so excited to honor all these outstanding educators for what they do for our children every day. This is truly a passionate group of educators."
Fluvanna County Public Schools Teacher of the Year and Fluvanna County High School Teacher of the Year: Ms. Lori Hoffman
Ms. Hoffman teaches Geometry and serves as Math Team Leader. She is a graduate of Longwood College where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics. She received her Master of Education degree in Secondary Education from George Washington University. Ms. Hoffman has 18 years of teaching experience and has been with Fluvanna County Public Schools since 2005. Ms. Hoffman has served as a mentor for other teachers and has been a major contributor in the development of Fluvanna's mathematics curriculum. Ms. Hoffman has served on Virginia Department of Education's Item Review Committee for the Standards of Learning (SOL) test for Geometry. Since Ms. Hoffman has been teaching Geometry in Fluvanna, 100 percent of her students have passed the Geometry SOL test. James Barlow, Principal of Fluvanna County High School, described Ms. Hoffman as, "tough but fair with her students. Ms. Hoffman's work ethic and organization is unparalleled. Her commitment to the students and their education is an inspiration to others." Ms. Hoffman is married to Jay Hoffman and is the mother of two: a son, Michael Tamony, eleventh grader at the High School; and a daughter, Lauren Tamony, a junior at James Madison University.
Carysbrook Elementary School: Ms. Jennifer Flood
Ms. Flood is a Third-Grade Teacher at Carysbrook Elementary School. She has six years of teaching experience and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from Mary Baldwin College. Prior to entering the field of education, she worked for Dominion Virginia Power. Ms. Flood serves as a mentor for new teachers. She has provided professional development sessions to her colleagues this year on Math Investigations. Her Principal, Don Stribling, describes her as, "committed to achievement. She participates in ongoing professional development activities and continually researches ways to improve her instruction." Ms. Flood and her husband, Bert, reside in Fluvanna County.
Columbia Elementary School: Ms. Skyler Fox
Ms. Fox is a First-Grade Teacher at Columbia Elementary School. She has three years of teaching experience. Skyler graduated from Fluvanna County High School and Longwood University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies. She has also served as Volleyball and Softball Coach at the High School this year. Ms. Janet Harper, Assistant Principal at Columbia School says, "Ms. Fox is fabulous! She is dynamic and her students love her. She has a wonderful rapport with her students." Ms. Fox is planning a June wedding.
Cunningham Elementary School: Ms. Cynthia Peck
Ms. Peck is a Second-Grade Teacher at Cunningham. She has 13 years of teaching experience. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Lynchburg College. Ms. Peck holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia where she majored in Curriculum and Instruction- Reading. Ms. Sue Davies, Principal of Cunningham says, "Her focus is on high expectations for all of her children. She has an attitude of ‘Whatever it Takes!'" Ms. Peck is married to Shannon Peck and is the mother of two children: a son, Cody; and a daughter, Taylor.
Fluvanna Middle School: Ms. Rebecca Smith
Ms. Smith is the Foreign Language Exploratory Teacher at Fluvanna Middle School. She has 12 years of teaching experience. Ms. Smith is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. Ms. Smith earned her Master of Education degree from Old Dominion University where she studied Education Leadership. Mr. Frank Leech, FMS Principal says, "Ms. Smith is always willing to go the extra mile for each student. She is organized, creative, and upbeat." Ms. Smith is married to Tre' Smith, a physical education teacher at Carysbrook. They have two sons, Tre' and Jaidon.
Central Elementary School: Ms. Elva Key
This year the teachers of Central Elementary School decided to recognize Ms. Elva Key for her tireless service to Fluvanna County. She has 51 years of experience with Fluvanna County Public Schools. She has been a secretary at Central for her entire tenure. Ms. Key is married to Herman Key, Sr. She is mother of four children: Darwin, Darrell (deceased), Herman Key, Jr. (deceased), and Cheryl. Ms. Barnabei, Principal of Central Elementary says, "Ms. Key's dedication, personal relationships, and community involvement is exemplary. She has served as the backbone to Central Elementary. She serves as the initial contact for parents and students, providing them with a warm welcome and, many times, a big hug and a kiss." Ms. Key previously received the Superintendent's Award for Community Service.
