Waynesboro Kids Volunteer in Exchange for Guitar Lessons
A dozen kids in Waynesboro
are well on their way to becoming rock stars - and it's not costing them a
A group of 9- to 12-year-olds
is part of the Waynesboro YMCA Childcare program, and they are learning to play
guitar free at the Valley Music Academy.
Right now the kids only
borrow electric guitars but the plan is for those who want one to volunteer
some hours at the Y and keep a guitar.
"There's so many kids
that spend a lot of screen time, a lot of games. We want to encourage kids at
the YMCA to be active, to be helping, to broaden their horizons. And music is
another opportunity to expose them to something that normally maybe they
wouldn't be engaged in," said Jeff Fife, the Waynesboro YMCA director.
Fife says the guitars were
donated by the Fender Foundation and there are more on the way.
