Waynesboro Kids Volunteer in Exchange for Guitar Lessons

Posted: Updated:

A dozen kids in Waynesboro are well on their way to becoming rock stars - and it's not costing them a dime.

A group of 9- to 12-year-olds is part of the Waynesboro YMCA Childcare program, and they are learning to play guitar free at the Valley Music Academy.

Right now the kids only borrow electric guitars but the plan is for those who want one to volunteer some hours at the Y and keep a guitar.

"There's so many kids that spend a lot of screen time, a lot of games. We want to encourage kids at the YMCA to be active, to be helping, to broaden their horizons. And music is another opportunity to expose them to something that normally maybe they wouldn't be engaged in," said Jeff Fife, the Waynesboro YMCA director.

Fife says the guitars were donated by the Fender Foundation and there are more on the way.
