A Staunton city councilman says he is running for Congress.

Democrat Bruce Elder is running for the 6th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The antique car dealer and father of four faces long-time Republican incumbent Bob Goodlatte in the November 2014 election.

Elder is serving his second term on City Council and says he's worked with people throughout the commonwealth regardless of party, background or personal philosophy.

"We've been able to find common ground and discuss things in a civilized way. That is not what we're seeing in Washington. I think that people are fed up with a Congress that spends its time needlessly bickering over incidental things. And we need to work on issues of consequence in a consequential way."

Elder says he sees opportunities in education, economic development and transportation.

He says he intends to run a peaceful campaign.
