Huja, Mallek Speak on City-County Cooperation at Meeting
Elected leaders in Charlottesville and Albemarle County say working together is keeping the area on the right track. Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja joined Albemarle Board of Supervisors Chair Ann Mallek at the May meeting of the Senior Statesmen of Virginia Wednesday.
Despite some challenges ahead, Huja says further city-county cooperation will help the entire area prosper.
"We are both part of a very good community, a very healthy community and a vibrant community, but we also need to make some improvements and we can work together on those areas," said Huja.
Mallek says neither jurisdiction would be successful without the other, and both have a great working relationship right now.
"Yes we have difficulties like siblings, but we're going to stick it out and we're going to lock the door and stay at the table until we get it done," said Mallek.
Mallek says she is optimistic the county and city will work together on solid waste issues, sewer and pump station cost shares, and stormwater management improvements.
Moving forward, Huja says the city is focused on a joint fire protection agreement, and a better joint transit system.
