Charlottesville, Va.– Piedmont Virginia Community College has selected a long-time faculty member to receive honors for service and teaching.

Beryl Solla, professor of art, is the recipient of the 2013 PVCC Distinguished Service Award. Nominated by PVCC faculty, staff and students, Solla received the award for her many contributions to the College including public events, student activities and academic classes. Solla has brought thousands of community members to the PVCC campus with gallery openings, free movie nights and "Let There Be Light", an annual exhibit of light-centered artwork illuminating the outdoors for a one-night celebration open to the public.

PVCC President Frank Friedman said, "Beryl's strong connections with the art community have been a significant factor in the attraction to and success of the College's cultural and academic opportunities."

Solla has taught hundreds of students since starting out as an adjunct professor at PVCC in 1999. In addition to teaching, she is chair of the art department and director of the PVCC gallery. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida International University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami.
