Council Approves Funding Plan for Hillsdale Drive Upgrades

Posted: Updated:

Hillsdale Drive could soon see some major improvements. Monday night, Charlottesville City Council approved the funds for proposed upgrades.

The Shops at Stonefield developers are giving the city $800,000 to help improve traffic conditions on Hillsdale Drive.

The Hillsdale Drive Extension is a planned road that is expected to relieve congestion on Route 29 and the Hydraulic Road intersection. It is a state-funded project but the money isn't expected to come for another couple of years.

Now Stonefield developers are giving the city money to start the project that would connect the road from the dead end at Whole Foods to India Road. Planners say it is an important step in this project.

"This is the number one road priority for the city of Charlottesville so this is a way to realize a portion of it," said Jim Tolbert, the city's director of neighborhood development.

The planned improvements for Hillsdale Drive include bike lanes and sidewalks.
