UPDATE 5/9/13: The Ladd closing ceremony has been moved to Wednesday May 15, 7:00 p.m.

UPDATE: The events scheduled for Tuesday have been canceled due to weather. Ladd has not released a rescheduled date.

Teachers, students, and parents from the past half-century are preparing to close an Augusta County elementary school where they worked or went to class. Ladd Elementary will shut its doors in a month.

The school's students and teachers have all visited their new schools for next year. Now, it's time to say goodbye with a musical celebration.

Stephanie Quick is currently preparing her students for end-of-year testing in the same second-grade classroom where she went to school.

"This is where I got my love for learning and also my desire to become a teacher," said Quick.

Quick and her kids are finishing the last few weeks at Ladd Elementary School. They'll split up to three other schools when Augusta County closes Ladd in June.

"I'm excited about what's in the future for me and these students, but it's very sad to see this school close," said Quick.

Before the school closes, Ladd's 350 students will celebrate their school's 48-year history with a patriotic closing concert.

"We want to finish out our year here strong," said Quick.

The school is inviting parents, alumni, teachers and principals - past and present - to expand the Ladd family circle at Tuesday's celebration.

Debbie McCormick, Ladd's intervention specialist, will find a lot of familiar faces.

"I have had literally hundreds of students here, and they have all been delightful," said McCormick.

McCormick has taught in the same fifth-grade classroom for 29 years.

"It's really hard to imagine not coming here every day. I mean, I've been coming here every day for 30 years," said McCormick.

McCormick admits change is hard, but she's encouraged these students will move on with many memories of Ladd.

"It doesn't matter where you go or what you do. It's the kids that make the school," said McCormick.

The closing ceremony concert starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday in front of the school - weather permitting. The last day of classes is on June 7.
