A house in Albemarle County is a beacon of hope for victims of domestic violence. It was opening weekend at the Design House - which benefits the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE).

People came out in droves to tour the Design House Sunday. Their visit is helping women and children in need of the comforts of a home.

Simple touches, fresh coats of paint and thoughtful themes drew visitors to the 2013 Design House in Farmington. Organizers say the house is a reminder of the value of having a place to call home.

"Peace on earth truly does begin at home and we believe everyone deserves a safe, wonderful environment to live in," said Ann Horner of Shelter for Help in Emergency.

All proceeds from tickets to see the Design House will benefit the Shelter for Help in Emergency. Last year, the event helped the non-profit support more than 200 victims of domestic violence and provide more than 4,000 nights of shelter.

Organizers say this year's event is even more important following federal and state support cuts.

"Without this support our shelter would not continue," Horner said. "Not only do we have a safe house for people to stay in, we also do a lot of community outreach hoping that we can begin to prevent domestic violence before it happens."

The owners of the house gave 21 designers a clean slate to turn their visions into reality.      The funding from these tours will help the shelter for help in emergency give women with visions of a brighter future the support they need.

"They are just so thankful to have a place to go to be safe, to regroup, most of them have children so they need a lot of care with their children even and just some support from day to day," said Rebecca Thomas, SHE volunteer.

Organizers say this weekend's visits were up 40 percent over last year's number.

The Design House runs until May 19. It's open every day except Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
