Youth Unemployment Rate High Despite National Numbers
Increasing jobs numbers drove markets to record highs Friday - but the unemployment rate for millennials, ages 18 to 29, isn't so bright.
According to non-partisan youth advocacy organization Generation Opportunity, the youth unemployment rate in April sat at 16.1 percent.
Managers at the Virginia Workforce Center on Hydraulic Road say they're not surprised - but they say the trend can be reversed with some simple steps.
"I think a lot of times they don't understand what is required by employers, and so they don't look into how do I interview, and how do I present myself, and is my resume appropriate?" said Elizabeth Bouldin-Clopton, manager of the Virginia Workforce Center.
The center sponsors a variety of free programs to help young people find jobs. Its youth program helps with resume writing and career preparation. It also sponsors a GED program, and has a career counselor on site.
