The University of Virginia's Rotunda could get a fresh coat of new paint as early as next week.
Work crews are busy sanding down the new copper finish on the Rotunda dome. They are well ahead of schedule on the renovation project, hoping to finish by graduation.
After sanding wraps up Monday, they could begin laying down white paint as early as Tuesday - but only if weather allows.
"So we will take a look at the forecast Monday, and decide whether or not this is something we can do before graduation or if we should wait until after graduation," said historic preservation architect Jody Lahendro.
Crews are using a very special paint, which needs completely clear weather to dry and cure.
UVA used to touch up the Rotunda's paint about every year, but once they finish this project, the Rotunda's new coat should last for up to three decades.
