Just days after someone painted a racial slur on the Beta Bridge at the University of Virginia, an apparent response appeared on the landmark on Saturday.
A message on the bridge reads "Black solidarity and progression. Racism will not deface our vision."
Then, in larger letters it reads, "Black power. Say it to my face."
The bridge was painted over Wednesday after someone spray painted it with a racial slur and a vulgar image.
The University of Virginia's Beta Bridge has been a standard for support and encouragement for generations, as well-wishers regularly repaint their messages.
Wednesday someone turned racist and crude - spray painting the bridge with a racial slur and a vulgar image. Now, student council is coming out against the desecration, saying UVA's commitment to equality, honor, and mutual respect leave no room for the hateful vandalism.
That portion of the bridge has been repainted.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 marks the date of yet another racial incident at the University of Virginia. On this morning, a disgusting racial slur, accompanied by a grotesque and appalling illustration, was discovered on the popular Beta Bridge. This display of racial intolerance leaves members of the Black Student Alliance and many in the University community questioning the sincerity and validity of the "commitment" to fostering a nurturing intellectual community where students of all backgrounds feel welcomed.
The University out to be a space, above all else, where students, faculty, and administrators of all colors and backgrounds feel safe and valued. The implications of this action, however, suggest that this might be far from the reality. It is no secret that there has been a long and extensive history of racial intolerance and racially charged incidents here at the University, including, but not limited to, past similar incidents on Beta Bridge. At a time when the African American enrollment rate at the University is steadily decreasing, it is truly disheartening to be reminded that within out "community of trust" there are individuals who choose to target and marginalize any minority community.
The Black Student Alliance strongly encourages those who share our passion and commitment to eliminating the repetition of such hate crimes to critically evaluate the nature of the racial climate. We will continue to promote unity and tolerance both on Grounds and within the larger Charlottesville community, and hope that we have your support in this endeavor.
