Ten people from Charlottesville are packing their bags to fly to Winneba, Ghana Monday on a mission to strengthen sister city relations. They are the third official delegation to visit the African city.

The delegation is a diverse group that includes representatives from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville City Council, and the regional library system.

The trip to Winneba will be the first of its kind for Charlottesville High School Senior Deniqua Frye.  "I'm really nervous. I've never been on a plane ever in my life, I've never been out of the country before," she said.

Frye is representing the Charlottesville City of Promise on this year's delegation heading to Winneba.

She said, "I've packed a lot of dresses, a lot of sundresses, a lot of maxi dresses, sandals, these tennis shoe for the hike that we're going to go on, and bug spray that's the most important."

After an expected 11.5 hours in the air, Frye and nine others will start their 10-day visit in the African sister city.

"These official delegations sort of help create and strengthen and sustain the relationships between the two communities and while we're there, we just get a real taste of Ghanaian life and Ghanaian culture," said Charlottesville City Councilor and Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation President Dave Norris.

The group has a full itinerary planned, which includes a meeting with the U.S. ambassador in Ghana and visiting former slave castles along the coast. They will also continue working to help the city of Winneba build its first public library.

"That's what sister cities are all about," Norris said. "It's not just about government officials going on these sort of junkets back and forth. It's really about communities coming together across the waters and creating bonds of friendship and collaboration and that's really happening now and it's great to see."

It's a collaboration that is giving Frye an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She said, "It's just important just to broaden the spectrum about what life is and how it's different for everybody."

The city has sent a delegation to Winneba every other year since 2009. In between, Winneba has sent groups to Charlottesville.

The delegation will fly out of Dulles International Airport Monday afternoon. The trip is privately-funded through donations, fundraising and out-of-pocket contributions.
