Police and hospitals in central Virginia are safely disposing of hundreds of pounds of unwanted prescription drugs Saturday night.

Albemarle County police collected around 900 pounds of pills, needles, creams and syrups on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The drug drop-off keeps medications from falling into the wrong hands and gives people an environmentally safe way to get rid of expired or unused prescriptions.

"I think it's important because, one, it provides a safer environment in the home, children aren't having that access to those medications," Jerry Schenk of the Albemarle County Police Department, said. "It also provides a safer way to dispose of this medication so that it doesn't hurt the environment."

Waynesboro police collected 323 pounds of prescription drugs during a take-back event held Saturday.
