Central VA Home-Schooled Students Gather for Prom

Some central Virginia home-schooled students participated in a traditional high school event Friday night. They got dolled up and danced the night away at prom.

More than 200 home-schooled students celebrated prom James Bond-style.

"Every year so far it's been amazing. It's just a bunch of home-schoolers coming together and having some fun," said student Patrick Cottrell.

The prom was at the historic Ash Lawn-Highland. It was decked out with games, food, a photo booth and of course there was dancing. Many students enjoyed the Casino Royale theme.

"We've kind of had girly themes the last few times so it's kind of fun to sort of have a different one," said student Alexandra Sansovich.

Melissa Dickie, a prom committee volunteer, says it is a great experience for the students.

"It's absolutely filling a need in our community and it's just a great opportunity for them to have this milestone event in their life that otherwise they might not have," Dickie said.

With students traveling from as far as Richmond and Fredericksburg, it was also a chance for students to make new friends.

"I think it's important to see everyone and see friends and connect with people you don't get to see every day," Sansovich said.

And no prom is complete without a prom king and queen. But this year they did things differently. A Queen Elizabeth lookalike came to crown a duke and duchess and a count and countess whose names, out of the spirit of fairness, were drawn out of a hat.

This is the third year for the Home-school Prom. The committee hopes to have next year's prom at Ash Lawn-Highland again.
