Thursday, almost 40 representatives from across the state are meeting in Charlottesville to discuss their reach around the world.  Charlottesville is hosting this year's Virginia Chapter of Sister Cities International annual meeting at CitySpace.

Members from 10 of the state's 15 official sister cities programs pinned flags of their respective international partnerships on a world map.

Karl Ackerman, chair of the Charlottesville Sister City Commission, says this is a chance to present their story.

"I notice that it is particularly school-centered. We have a presentation from Jackson-Via, which has divided its school into four different houses based on our four sister cities, so that the kids are in one of those houses - they learn a lot about them when delegations come from other places they visit them. They're really getting a sort of hands-on feel of geography," he said.

The event also featured members of the Charlottesville Area Chamber of Commerce discussing how to make the most of volunteers and representatives from the University of Virginia talking about the importance of global partnerships.

Ackerman said, "Students, I know this is true from my two daughters, they expect to live in the world, and the world isn't just Charlottesville, it isn't just Virginia, it isn't just the East Coast it isn't just the United States, there is now this ability to virtually and physically visit other parts of the world very quickly."

Charlottesville maintains four sister city relationships: Besancon, France; Pleven, Bulgaria; Poggio a Caiano, Italy; and, Winneba, Ghana. Part of a delegation from Charlottesville will be leaving for Winneba on Monday.
