Sex Crime Issues Dominate VA Crime Panel's Agenda

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia State Crime Commission will spend a lot of time talking about sex crimes this year.

Among the commission's assignments is a comprehensive study of the reporting, investigation and tracking of child sexual abuse cases. As part of that effort, the commission will look at sex between teachers and high school students who have turned 18. Under current law, sex between a teacher and a student is illegal only if the student is a minor.

The commission also will examine proposals to expunge prostitution convictions of defendants who were forced into prostitution, and to allow prior sex crime convictions to be introduced as evidence in sexual abuse cases.

Reports and recommendations on those issues will be issued for the 2014 General Assembly's consideration.
