Hazmat crews responding to Carruthers Hall after call about a suspicious substance
Carruthers Hall at UVA is back open and in normal operation after police responded to a call about a suspicious substance at the building Wednesday afternoon.
According to a source with the Charlottesville Fire Department, hazardous materials crews responded to Carruthers Hall on Emmet Street at the University of Virginia after a call came in about an envelope that was found there containing a white powder.
The first call came in at 11:56 a.m. Twelve fire and rescue units responded to scene.
The building was evacuated shortly after and UVA advised avoiding the area. After further investigation, the substance was determined not to be hazardous and the building was reopened.
