Reverse 911 Call to Survey Cville Homeowners on Smoke Detectors

Posted: Updated:

The Charlottesville Fire Department wants to make sure everyone in the city is safe - that includes making sure working smoke detectors are installed in every home.

If you live in Charlottesville you will probably get a Reverse 911 this week, asking about your smoke detectors.

The phone calls started Wednesday afternoon and will continue for the next couple of days. The call includes a survey asking you whether or not you have a working smoke detector in your home. If you don't, someone from the fire department will come set one up free of charge.

The fire department hopes this program will save lives.

"Studies have shown that having working smoke alarms in your residence increase your chance by 66 percent of escaping a home residential fire," said Rich Jones, fire chief for the Charlottesville Fire Department.

Once the data from the survey is collected the fire department will assess which areas in the city need the most attention.

Firefighters will also be going door to door to those people who don't have landlines.

If you are interested in getting a smoke detector installed, you can call the smoke detector hotline at 434-970-3245.
