Melanie Mitchell Leaves UVa Softball as Best Player In Program History

Posted: Updated:

Virginia softball's Melanie Mitchell has shattered almost all of the programs records and she's walking off UVA's field as their greatest player in school history.

The 6'1'' pitcher holds the single season record for wins, complete games, innings pitched and appearances.

She also holds career records for wins, strikeouts, complete games, innings pitched, appearances and starts. Her 1,063 strikeouts ranks 5th in ACC history.

This season, she has a 2.48 ERA with 232 strikeouts in 186 innings pitched.

Head Coach, Eileen Schmidt said, "To do that you have got to be a competitor and want the ball all the time. Good day, bad day, I want the ball. Put the ball in my hands and that's what Mel brings you"

Mitchell added, "I've just had a lot of opportunities and with those opportunities have come a lot of good wins, a lot of good defense and a lot of good offense. We've just put it together enough times for me to have those opportunities."

Growing up in White Plains Maryland, most of her friends rooted for the Terps. Mitchell always thought of UVA as the smart school - but when she got to Charlottesville as a recruit - reality hit.

"You get here and you realize the academics are bar none and you realize why everyone who graduates from UVA is held in such high esteem," said Mitchell.

Mitchell isn't done pitching. She plans to play for the National Pro Fast Pitch League and she's starting her professional career as a systems engineer at Virginia Diodes.

Mitchell said, "I'll miss the atmosphere, the team...You can go to them with anything you have. Whether you're up or you're down, they're always around you to be that support system."

That feeling is mutual.

Mitchell's catcher, Kristen Hawkins said, "I am very lucky and blessed to have catched for such a great pitcher and she's such a great person and a friend. So I'm so happy she's come here and done here thing."

Mitchell added, "I'm gonna be a few miles away I'll definitely come to watch some games...absolutely!"
