First Annual Pinwheel Parade on Cville Downtown Mall

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of preschoolers from Charlottesville and Albemarle County marched along the downtown mall with pinwheels in hand Tuesday.  The First Annual Pinwheel Parade is part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

More than 300 preschoolers carried colorful pinwheels to celebrate why young children are special. The sea of preschoolers, parents, and educators walked from the Omni Hotel to the nTelos Pavilion in downtown Charlottesville.

Smart Beginnings and the Pinwheel Collaborative teamed up for the parade. The event recognizes both Child Abuse Prevention Month and the National Week of the Young Child.  Organizers say this has been months in the making.

"We really just wanted to offer something fun that was going to bring attention to the fact that young children are important. Their education is important but it's also just an opportunity for us to come together as a community and really celebrate the value and future really that children offer our community," said Jessie Ray, director of Smart Beginnings.

A concert was performed for the kids when they arrived at the pavilion. It featured area artists Cathy Bollinger, Elly Tucker, and Paul Briar.

The pinwheel is the national symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month.
