A Charlottesville nonprofit is working to fight discrimination. The group says there is a fair housing gap across the Charlottesville area, and now it's hosting an event to tackle the issue.

The Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA) is hosting a fair housing forum Tuesday. It's an opportunity for the public to learn more about housing discrimination - something the alliance says is prevalent in our area.

Earlier this year the PHA released the results of a study it conducted that found a need for more fair housing education in the Charlottesville area. The study was conducted by having people pretend to look for housing and report the practices of area rental and real estate professionals. PHA did a total of 36 tests in-person and over the phone.

The tests were based on three areas: race, disability, and families with children. It found discrimination in these areas may limit the housing opportunities for people in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Tuesday the alliance hopes to raise awareness and promote compliance with fair housing laws.

"We're also taking public input so we want to hear from the community ways that they think our local community can advance fair housing in the future," said Karen Reifenberger, the director of the Piedmont Housing Alliance.

The event is geared toward local government, planners, anyone involved in the housing industry, as well as anyone looking for housing. The fair housing forum is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Charlottesville council chambers.
