On Sunday, dozens of kids came out for the annual Children's Bike Rodeo in Charlottesville. It was a chance for the group to try out their wheels in a safe environment and learn the basics of bike safety.

"It's taking the messages from teachers and parents of 'wear your helmet' but it's also the muscle memory of an on-bike skill where you're practicing the tight turns, you're practicing stopping and starting," said Community Bikes volunteer Shelly Stern.

The kids also learned how to safely load their bike onto a bus.

The event coordinator says its best to learn in a practice situation rather than on a busy street.
