#7 UVA Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against #5 FSU
The #7 Virginia baseball team beat #5 Florida State in both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Davenport Field, winning Game One 9-2 and Game Two 2-0.
Nick Howard (1), Derek Fisher (5), and Brandon Downes (6) all hit two-run home runs for the Cavaliers in Game One.
The home run was the first of Howard's career.
Brandon Waddell pitched six innings for Virginia, giving up just one run and four hits.
Senior Scott Silverstein and junior Kyle Crockett combined for a one-hitter in Game Two.
Silverstein pitched seven shutout innings for the 'Hoos, giving up just one hit while striking out six.
Crockett was perfect in the final two innings to earn his 8th save of the season.
Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "That's how you win championship baseball, right there. Sure, we'd like to knock the fences down in both games, and score a bunch of runs. We'd love that. But you win it by high quality pitching, and playing good defense. If you can get that on a consistent basis, you're going to have a championship type program, and we certainly got that today."
UVA scored the only runs of the game in the 5th inning, as Branden Cogswell doubled to the corner to drive in Reed Gragnani and Nate Irving.
Virginia (34-6, 15-5 ACC) will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1pm at Davenport Field.
