Charlottesville Prepares for Dogwood Parade Security
Dogwood Parade Route
Police across the U.S. are taking extra safety precautions at public events. Charlottesville's no exception, especially when it comes to the big Dogwood Parade.
Saturday, police will shut down the entire parade route at 9 a.m., an hour earlier than usual. They say the extra time will help them examine the area for anything suspicious.
Police will use dogs to help sniff out the area and check for explosives. Signs are posted along the parade route, warning drivers to skip many of the street parking spaces. Most parking areas on the route that stretches from McIntire Road to East Market Street and back will be restricted until 3 p.m.
"Closing the parade route down at 9 a.m. which gives us an opportunity to de-canvass the area, and check the area down for any particular unusual backpacks or anything like that that may be around the route itself," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts, spokesman for the Charlottesville Police Department.
The Seventh Street parking lot will be closed from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. The Seventh Street Northeast, Fourth Street and Second Street mall crossings will also be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The intersection of McIntire Road and Preston Avenue will close at 8 a.m.
