Hundreds of people will be getting free dental care in Albemarle County this weekend. The Charlottesville Free Clinic is hosting a "Mission of Mercy Dental day" at Covenant Church on Saturday.

Clinic organizers handed out 400 tickets Friday for free services including X-rays and extractions. The work is meant for people across central Virginia with urgent dental needs.

Visiting the dentist isn't an activity most people look forward to - but hundreds waited in line at Covenant Church for free dental care Friday.

"It's been over a year now and I still can't figure out a way to get that into my budget, so meanwhile my teeth were just getting worse and worse," said Laura Martin, who waited in line Friday.

Martin, 45, is disabled, but took a JAUNT bus to wait in line for her ticket.

"The dentist that I saw said that I do have fillings that need to be worked on, some cleaning definitely, and some sensitivity going on up there," said Martin.

The Charlottesville Free Clinic says the crowd emphasizes that the need for dental care is right here at home.

"One reason we're doing this project is because we're going full blast in our dental clinic but we still have a waiting list for our services, so we're hoping to get out and help some people this weekend," said Kathryn Cross, development director of the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

More than 500 volunteers and 50 dentists will be on site Saturday - tending to an area they say affects your overall health.

"I work in the emergency room at UVA, I see people who have health problems with their hearts and infections, terrible health problems that started with their teeth, just because they didn't get routine dental care," said Dr. Scott Syverud, clinical medical director at the clinic.

Saturday's free dental clinic is funded by a grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. Appointments will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
