A Greene County high school student is getting $300,000 toward his college education.

The William Monroe High School senior was chosen out of a pool of 450 applicants for a full-ride scholarship to Northeastern University in Boston.  Brett Shifflett will be one of 10 "Torch Scholars" this fall. It's a scholarship for first-generation college students.

Shifflett says he was shocked and excited when he heard the news.

"Just cross your fingers and hope for the best and I ended up getting a call while I was in New Jersey with some friends and the lady let me know that I have been accepted to get full tuition, room and board and everything and I was going to be a Torch Scholar," Shifflett said.

Shifflett will enroll in the architecture program at the school.
