Now is an important time to honor our first responders. Thursday, students at Greene Primary School took some time to say thanks.

Fire, police and rescue personnel were on hand in the primary school's gym as students expressed their gratitude.

Lance Lemon, a kindergartner, honored first responders in front of hundreds of his classmates by reading the 'fireman's prayer.'

"Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, to quickly and efficiently to put the fire out," said Lemon.

The students performed songs for the first responders with lyrics that truly say 'thank you.'

"It was heartfelt, it was heartfelt by the teachers and the kids and they really enjoy doing it," said Mike Coiner, Greene primary's principal.

To each student, the first responders are more than just a fireman, a policeman or an emergency medical technician - they are heroes.

"The program put on today by the school and these children was awesome, the support that they showed us, we don't consider ourselves heroes but in their eyes we do and we're thankful that they support us just as much as we support them," said Kelly Clay of the Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Each department received an official honor plaque from the students and a special video presentation full of 'thank you's.'

Coiner says the event was more than just to honor first responders - it also teaches a good lesson about dealing with emergency situations.

Students that have called 911 before talked about their experiences. It was a good learning experience because other students heard first-hand from a peer how to handle an emergency situation.
