A new shopping center in Albemarle County has cleared yet another hurdle.

The proposed Fifth Street Station is one step closer to full approval. Thursday morning the site plan for the new shopping center was approved, meaning the application can move forward.

We're told the project will be split into three phases. The first will focus on building the Bent Creek Parkway that will connect Fifth and Avon streets. Wegmans grocery store will also be part of that first phase.

One resident from the Willoughby neighborhood wants to see trees added along the Bent Creek Parkway to help as a sound barrier.

Planners say more details will come later on.

"The landscape plan isn't required at this stage to be complete but when they come in for the final plan, more detail will be given at that point," said planner Megan Yaniglos.

The Fifth Street Station applicant will have a number of upcoming work sessions with the Architectural Review Board to hash out some details.

Groundbreaking of the first phase could begin as soon as the end of the year.
