Albemarle to Host Biotechnology Education Summit

Posted: Updated:

The biotechnology industry is booming in Albemarle County but companies are having a hard time finding people to take the high-paying jobs.

Hemoshear in Albemarle County is doubling in size each year. The pharmaceutical research company has 32 employees and is looking to expand. Hemoshear Vice President of Operations Nikki Hastings says finding people to fill open spots can be difficult.

"We want that support and talent to come from the local area," said Hastings.

Albemarle is partnering with the biotechnology industry to host an education summit.

"It really helps inform our educators what are the skill sets that are necessary," said Lee Catlin, Albemarle County spokesperson.

The purpose of the summit is to bring together those teaching the subject and those hiring to make sure they're on the same page.

"We believe the talent is here it's just about bringing awareness," said Hastings.

Economically, Albemarle hopes to get more biotechnology businesses setting up shop.

The summit will be held on May 2 at the Boar's Head Inn. To register to attend the summit, click here.
