Albemarle County schools are setting a high standard for innovative learning.

The group behind the three-year-old program Math, Men, Mission was honored on Wednesday. The mentoring program that provides a math camp for African-American students received the National School Board Association's Magna Award.

Mentors say the program is a crucial step in childhood development.

"The exposure to algebra and geometry at an early age just gives the kids a lot more confidence when they get to high school. Also, it builds on their leadership skills, that they feel confident about who they are as African-Americans," said Wendell Green, a mentor with the program.

Only one award is given out to school divisions throughout the country. Delegate David Toscano was on hand to congratulate the group.
