Destination ImagiNation (DI) is an international creative problem-solving program that offers children in kindergarten through university level a chance to showcase their critical thinking, presentation, brainstorming, time management, and research skills, by solving challenges in five different areas of interest. The DI program encourages out-of-the-box thinking, teaching children that there are many ways to approach and solve problems. Although DI is a competition, the program focuses more on team building that helps students develop lifelong abilities like collaboration, courtesy, and valuing diversity.

At the State Destination ImagiNation (DI) tournament on Saturday, April 13, Fluvanna County Public Schools was represented by the Rainbow Gang. The group developed an outreach project to help earn funds for classroom supplies for High School teachers. The team was charged with developing a video about their project and presenting it to a panel of judges at competition. They also had to complete a timed instant challenge.

With their second place finish, the Rainbow Gang advances to Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. The competition will be held from May 22 through May 25. At Global Finals there will be more than 16,000 attendees from all states and more than 30 countries competing for ultimate bragging rights.

The team's next challenge is to raise $3,500 by May 3 to register for the event. Team members are currently soliciting donations from area businesses and community groups to help fund its trip to

Knoxville. The team has set-up a site at http://www.youcaring.com/tuition-fundraiser/destination-imagination-globals-or-bust-/53784 to accept online contributions. As of this morning, they have raised $150.

"This is the third year that Fluvanna County Public Schools has competed in Destination ImagiNation and each year a team from the High School has advanced to Global Competition. This is a testament to the strength of the School Division's development of critical thinking skills, problem-solving and team work in our students," stated Brenda Gilliam, Director of Secondary Instruction.
