Albemarle County Planning Commission received an earful Tuesday night about a proposal that some say will limit people's property rights.
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has proposed putting language into the county's comprehensive plan that would enact restrictions on home and landowners inside the Monticello viewshed.
The foundation wants to protect the view - even if those guidelines are "voluntary." But opponents say that is just setting limits on neighbors' property rights.
"A few quotes attributed to Thomas Jefferson better reflects his vision on visions. Quote: ‘I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.' Quote: ‘The dead should not rule the living.' Jefferson had some thoughts apropos to the micro-management inherent in the county comprehensive plan draft," said Charles Batting.
The planning commission is expected to continue to accept input before it submits a final plan to the Board of Supervisors.
