Albemarle's Burris Accomplishes Life-Long Dream to Wear Maroon and Orange

Posted: Updated:

Albemarle HS baseball pitcher Joe Burris has a perfect 4-0 record this season with 50 strikeouts in just 31 innings and a 0.80 ERA helping the Patriots to an 9-2 record this season.

Joe Burris sends batters swinging and missing as Albemarle's starting pitcher and in just a few months he'll be wearing a Virginia Tech jersey.

Burris said, "I always thought I was capable to do what my dreams were but going to Tech is just awesome. I've always been a big fan."

His decision was one of the easiest he's ever made. Burris's dad played ball for the Hokie's and his sisters all went to Tech.

Albemarle Baseball's Head coach, Jimmy Bibb said, "We had Joe in a little league when he was 7, 8, 9 years-old and he used to wear a maroon and orange shoelaces."

His Catcher, Ty Pittman added, "Since his dad played baseball at Tech and everything it was just a big accomplishment - he truly loves it."

His trips on and off the mound on game-days is where Burris feels at home.

Burris said, "I just like to control the game I have a lot of fun up here...Once I get out here and I get in my zone then its just me and the catcher."

"He's a natural leader. He pushes all of us to do better," said Pittman.

"As a junior we saw his work ethic. He lost a lot of weight did a lot of running. I think that's when we really knew that he was going to be special."

As Burris prepares to play division one ball he says his ultimate goal is the play in the major leagues - but right now his main focus is just to improve and get better.

"I want to have as much fun as possible and play as many games as we can - a lot of us have never really felt what its like to get to states or regional's or anything like we got there last year - but we want to try and win as much as possible and just be the best team that we can be," said Burris.
