In Albemarle County on Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Transportation honored road workers who died on the job.
The vigil marks the kick off to National Work Zone Awareness Week, a time when VDOT urges drivers to be extra cautious.
"We are all concerned with the workers because they are the folks that are out on the road. They work in dangerous conditions everyday with traffic traveling sometimes 40, 50 miles an hour right next to them," said Sandy Meyer with Virginia Department of Transportation public affairs.
The ceremony took place at the VDOT Workers' Memorial on Afton Mountain.
Thirteen people died in 12 work-zone related crashes last year in Virginia.
