Meeting on Proposed Apartment Complex at Barracks & Emmet

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors are voicing their concerns about a new proposed five-story apartment complex that could be developed in Charlottesville.

The building would sit on a plot of land next to the Meadowbrook Shopping Center, at the intersection of Barracks Road and Emmet Street.

Developers want to allow more density in the land. One neighbor says that will cause major problems.

"This is one of the most important intersections in Charlottesville. Traffic is flowing pretty well here at the moment, but if you put 128 new residences in here, it's clearly going to have some traffic consequences," said Jack Brown, who lives near the proposed complex.

City officials say the plan is still early in the review process.

"There will have to be site plan review, there will have to be a special-use permit review and decision about whether to approve the additional density and then there is the entrance corridor design review," said Jim Tolbert, director of Charlottesville Neighborhood Development Services.

Neighbors say they want smart development.

There will be a meeting for community input at City Hall on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
