Volunteers in Charlottesville Offer Help Filing Taxes

Posted: Updated:

Monday is the last day to file 2012 federal income taxes.

Again this year, volunteers across the Charlottesville community banded together to offer free tax preparation for qualifying individuals. Undergraduates and law students at the University of Virginia are among those volunteers.

This year, they exceeded their own expectations, preparing more than 800 returns.

"I've been really impressed with the growth that we've seen. A lot of that is just increased client outreach efforts, in addition to greater word of mouth," said Patrick Bernhardt, a law student at UVA.

Volunteers at UVA say they have helped 25 percent more people this year compared with 2012, saving about $160,000 in tax preparation fees.
