New Apartment Complex Proposed Near Meadowbrook Shopping Center

Posted: Updated:

A new five-story apartment complex could be on its way to an already traffic-packed area in Charlottesville. The proposed complex would be at the intersection of Barracks Road and Emmett Street.

It would sit on a plot of land tucked away next to the Meadowbrook Shopping Center. If approved by the city, the building will have four levels of one- and two-bedroom apartments. There will also be a garage level on the bottom.

The owner, Clara Bell Wheeler, says the complex would be especially great for University of Virginia students and staff. Wheeler says if the complex is successful, a second phase of the project could be 10 to 15 years down the road.

Wheeler says the apartment complex will help boost business at the shopping center.

"I've talked to all of the tenants and they all seem to be very happy that there will be something on this grassy lot and it will bring business to them," said Wheeler.

Wheeler says she isn't concerned the complex will cause any traffic problems and she hopes neighbors and nearby businesses feel the same.

There will be a meeting for community input next Wednesday at 10 a.m. at City Hall.
