Tom Tom Founders Festival Kicks Off Block Party, Unveils Mural

Posted: Updated:

Thousands are turning out for a one-of-a-kind festival in Charlottesville this weekend to enjoy music, arts, food and innovation.

The Tom Tom Founders Festival is kicking off a big block party Friday by unveiling a new mural. The  mural beat out 20 other entries of artwork to win the first McGuffey Mural Contest. The four-day festival is dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity.

"It's going to be 60 concerts, five block parties, 30 innovation talks, panels, art exhibits. It's going to be amazing," said Paul Beyer, the festival's director.

Artist David Cook will be at the McGuffey Art Center on Friday finishing up his mural, filled with geometric designs. An area Girl Scout troop has also been helping him paint the mural throughout the week.

"I have to stretch a piece of tape that's 30 feet long sometimes and make it perfectly straight or else the whole design gets ruined," Cook said.

Crews are also already at the art center setting up for the Tom Tom block party. Beyer says it's all about featuring Charlottesville's creativity

"The theme of the festival is ideas starting and staying in Charlottesville, so whether that's an artist, whether its an entrepreneur, whether that's a musician, all these creative people we want them to be celebrated in Charlottesville," said Beyer.

Around 2,500 people came out for last year's block party and even more are anticipated this year .

The festival started Thursday night. The block party kicks off Friday at 5p.m.
