Bellamy in Traffic Court, Case Continued

Posted: Updated:

A man vying for a seat on Charlottesville City Council appeared in court Thursday morning. Wesley Bellamy is charged with driving with a suspended license.

News first broke two weeks ago about Bellamy's charge.

Bellamy appeared briefly inside Charlottesville General District Court Thursday. After he received the original charge in February, Bellamy failed to appear in court for his initial hearing.

In a news conference two weeks ago, he said the clerk had issued a warrant and paperwork to the wrong address, causing confusion.

Bellamy declined to answer any questions until after his next hearing.

"I won't be able to answer any questions until then. And I'm looking forward to speaking about it and getting this all cleared away," he said.

Bellamy first announced his candidacy for City Council in mid-March. He's vying to fill the seat left vacant by former Mayor Dave Norris.
Bellamy declined to comment on his original charge Thursday, under advisement from his attorney. He insists the entire ordeal is a misunderstanding and will address questions in May.

His next court date is set for May 16 when the court will take up his suspended license and failure to appear charges.
