UVa Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Delaware St.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team swept Delaware State, 9-1 and 10-1, Wednesday afternoon at The Park in Charlottesville, Va. With the wins, the Cavaliers improved to 18-19 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 12-23.

In the first game, the Cavaliers broke open the contest in the second inning with a five-run rally with two outs. Junior Peyton Larus (Midlothian, Va.) walked with the bases loaded to score senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.), followed by a single by senior Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) that scored sophomore Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.).

Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) doubled to right center to clear the bases, scoring freshman Shannon McGinley (Prairie Valley, Kan.), Larus and Williams.

In the fourth, sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to score Williams, while Bowdren came around to score on a single by freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

The Cavaliers added two runs in the fifth to finish off the game with Harris and Skinkis earning RBIs.

Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) earned eight strikeouts with three hits and one run in five innings of work to pick up the win (13-11). Mitchell passed 200 strikeouts for the season (202) and has become the first UVa pitcher to record four seasons with 200 or more strikeouts.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., April 14-15 for a three-game series at Florida State. Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Monday night's 7 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
